The Rockland Boulders got back in the win column with a 2-1 victory over the Quebec Capitales in extra innings. Ryne Birk sped home from second base on a Matt Oberste sac-fly in the 10th inning to win the game.
Rockland has now won 8-of-10 overall to move within just one game of the third place New Jersey Jackals, and with seven wins they have set a new franchise record for most victories in a homestand with two games remaining.
Ryne Birk had an RBI triple to put the Boulders on the board first and that lead held up until the eighth inning when Quebec pushed across two runs to bring the score to 2-1. In the bottom of the ninth, Grant Heyman led off with a triple to deep center and scored on a Senoo Katsuya RBI single to tie the game, setting the stage for one of the most thrilling finishes of the season.
Closer Robbie Gordon held Quebec off the board in the top of the 10th, putting the hosts in strong position with Ryne Birk starting the bottom half on second base via the International Tiebreaker rule. Leadoff batter Matt Oberste quickly fell behind, 0-2, before lifting a booming drive to straightaway center field.
Quebec outfielder David Salgueiro tracked it down on the warning track but his momentum carried him toward the fence nearly 400 feet from home. With Birk in full flight around third, Manager Kevin Baez gave the green light and the relay throw was offline as Birk crossed the plate to send the crowd of 4,203 into wild celebration.
