(Ramapo, NY) – The Rockland Boulders of the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball (CanAm League) have signed right-hand pitcher Min Hur to a contract through the end of the 2013 season. The native of South Korea is owner of the independent Goyang Wonders in the Korea Baseball Organization and will be making his first professional start in the United States on Sunday, September 1st at 5PM against the Newark Bears at Provident Bank Park. Internationally, the game will be broadcast live and available to over 50 million viewers in South Korea via television, the Internet, and mobile devices. Locally, the game will be broadcast live on Cablevision channel 75 or 78 depending upon your viewing area.
Min, who is also known in his home country as a successful businessman, has studied the art of throwing the knuckleball under Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro, and has attended rookie tryout camps with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, and Seattle Mariners.
After attending a tryout period with the Rockland Boulders for two weeks this July, it was deemed that he had earned the opportunity. Min has certainly had a major impact on “baseball fever” in South Korea, where nearly seven million fans attended ballgames during the 2011 season, making it the country’s most popular sport. The Goyang team is currently the only independent professional team in the country, with several players having signed affiliated deals with Korean pro teams as a result.
“This is an opportunity for me to prove to Goyang Wonders players that the dream becomes a reality if you don’t give up,” Min stated. “I have achieved part of my dream but I will keep trying to achieve higher goals.”
According to Boulders Team President Ken Lehner, the significance of Min’s signing will extend far beyond the final week of the 2013 season, noting that he has already been extended Min an invitation to next year’s preseason camp.
“Min Hur has earned the right to pitch for the Rockland Boulders as our first Korean player as well as our first knuckleball pitcher,” Lehner noted. “We believe that Min pitching for the Boulders is the first step in an international working relationship between the Goyang Wonders and the Rockland Boulders that will be beneficial to independent baseball as a whole. The Knicks had Linsanity in 2012 and the Boulders have Minsanity in 2013.”
In addition to looking to pack the house with Boulders fans – who led the league in attendance last season – Min himself has purchased a number of tickets to be distributed to South Korean communities in the area, and commemorative merchandise such as “Min Mania” and “Minsanity” t-shirts will be available. The Boulders conclude the 2013 season with a series against the Newark Bears from Saturday, August 31 through Monday, September 2.
