The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have purchased the contract of former Rockland Boulders outfielder Stephen Cardullo and that he will start the season on their 25-man Opening Day roster.
Cardullo just completed an impressive 2017 spring training, where in 29 games for the Rockies, he batted .379 (8th in MLB), with 3 home runs (including 2 Grand Slams), and led the team with 15 RBI’s (13th in MLB) with an OPS (On-Base plus slugging percentage) of 1.062 (7th in MLB). He was named the Rockies MVP of spring training.
The Rockies start the season on Monday in Milwaukee when they face the Brewers at Miller Park in a 1:10 pm (CST) start. Cardullo is expected to play in left field.
“Congratulations to Steven” said Shawn Reilly Boulders EVP/General Manager. “He is an inspiration to baseball players’ thru-out the world about what can happen when you believe in yourself and never give up. We are very proud that he thrilled our fans for 3 seasons in our beautiful ballpark and look forward to cheering for him for a long career in the big leagues!” Reilly said.
Cardullo, the first former Boulders player to make the MLB, spent 3 seasons with the Boulders from 2013-2015. He signed a minor league contract with the Rockies before the start of the 2016 season, and was assigned to their AAA affiliate, the Albuquerque Isotopes. He was called up to the Rockies last August and made national headlines for hitting two home runs on his birthday. After the 2016 season, Cardullo was re-signed by the Rockies as a non-roster invitee to spring training in 2017.
“To go from the Boulders to the big leagues in just 18 months shows the extraordinary talent level that plays in the CanAm League” said Boulders manager Jamie Keefe.
The Boulders will begin their seventh season with a #BouldOpening on Thursday, May 18th when they host the Sussex County Miners at 7:00pm at Palisades Credit Union Park. Season Ticket Memberships and numerous other ticket packages are currently on-sale and can be purchased by visiting the box office or calling (845) 364-0009.
